In Loving Memory
of Maria Pannunzio

A Beautiful Life

A beautiful life
that came to an end.
She died as she lived,
everyone's friend.

In our hearts a memory will always be kept,
of one we loved, and will never forget.

Maria "Mary" Pannunzio (nee Distasio), 83, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, September 7, 2017.

Beloved wife of Pasquale Pannunzio for over 50 remarkable years. Loving and devoted mother of Teresa (Derrick), Onofrio (Michelle), and Tina (Chris). Dear Grandmother "Nonna" of Stephanie, Nicholas, Maggie and Willem. Born in Balvano, Potenza Italy on March 21, 1934. One of seven siblings, survived by her brother Pasquale and sister Antonina and pre-deceased by Vito, Donato, Antonio and Filomena.

Maria immigrated to Canada in 1951 arriving by boat at Pier 21 in Halifax - a new life in Canada. Her journey took her out West where she joined her siblings already settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She met her loving husband, Pasquale, as he travelled through Winnipeg while working in the mines of northern Ontario. They married soon after and together they moved to Toronto to start their new life.

Her love of family, home, children and community were evident in every aspect of her beautiful life. Family and children were of the utmost importance and this devotion extended past her family. Parents to foster children Steven and Sean and babysitter "grandmother" to many generations of children. Her home was always open to the community, neighborhood, local school and to the many family friends and relatives they had in Toronto.

Maria's love and talent for gardening and cooking brought everyone together. Her home garden grew into a community garden for all to enjoy - her neighbors, teachers, and friends all shared in her bounty. Her passion for cooking and giving nature, drew all those who loved her to her kitchen where many meals and memories were enjoyed.
